SAFF U20 Championship: ‘We have found our feet and the boys are more confident’: India U20 coach ahead of Bangladesh match

“Playing in a final is always a different feeling, it’s special. I myself won 3 SAFF championships as a player and a captain and was in two SAFF finals as assistant coach of the senior national team. It’s been a special feeling every time,” Venkatesh said on the eve of the match. “We’re all telling our boys about the same experience, and they’re all looking forward to the match.”

Although it will be a special occasion for the boys, Venkatesh cautioned against complacency. “We have to make sure we don’t get overwhelmed. We have to go out there and play our game, and win the match.” says Venkatesh.

“Bangladesh are a good team, and they showed that in our first match. We struggled a bit in our first match, but we found our footing and the boys are more confident now.”

Meanwhile, Bangladesh head coach Paul Smalley said that he has watched all of India’s matches and planned accordingly ahead of the final.

“They played a different game against Maldives than they played against us. We have reviewed all their matches and how they change their game and we have prepared accordingly. Smalley said.

“We understand very well how to expose their weaknesses, as much as they will work to expose ours. We wish them all the best for the game.”

Both teams will have one player suspended, Bangladesh will be without Shahidul Islam, while India will be without Parthiv Gogoi.

“We are missing Parthiv in this match. But that’s football. We have 23 players in our squad. We play, we win and we lose as a team. There is no person, and in his absence it is up to those who would be given the opportunity, to count the opportunity. Venkatesh quipped.

Defender Helen Nongtdu said: “We are not overconfident. We have to stay humble, and play tomorrow’s game as planned. We understand that we have to work together as a team against Bangladesh. Every match is a learning process for us.”
