Betting ads in India: The Indian government has issued another warning not to show betting advertisements on sports channels, newspapers and digital media platforms. The circular, issued on June 13, aims to block betting ads on sports channels during live matches. Follow live updates on cricket and other sports at InsideSport.IN.

“In the wider public interest, print and electronic media are advised to refrain from publishing advertisements on online betting platforms. Online and social media, including online advertising mediators and publishers, are advised not to display such ads in India or to target such ads to Indian audiences. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has given advice in the notification.

It should be noted that the Government of India had earlier issued a warning in 2020 not to show such advertisements on TV. However, this is not a “ban”. Due to the lack of clarity on betting advertising and its legal status in India, there has been an influx of advertising on sports channels and digital media.

Earlier, many expressed concern that betting advertisements violated the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) guidelines. According to the guidelines, “ads will not promote products, the use of which is prohibited by law”.

ASCI also states that real-money gaming or gambling ads will not appear on any platform, including OTT and digital media. However, despite the advice, such advertisements continue to be aired during live matches of IPL 2022 and other India series.
