After losing the first two T20 Internationals by a big margin, a record-breaking win in the third T20 could give Sri Lanka much-needed confidence ahead of the ODI series. The hosts have to do well in the 50-over leg of the series.

This will be the second ODI series for Sri Lanka this year and the first against the main opponent. They last played Zimbabwe in January and won the series 2-1. Sri Lanka have not had a great time in ODIs like the standings in the ODI Super League, they are in ninth position with just six wins from 18 matches.

The series gives them a perfect opportunity to start anew under their new coach Chris Silverwood and start their preparations for the upcoming ODI World Cup, which is going to be held in a familiar environment in India. They have announced a 21-member squad for the ODIs and will want to get their team combination right.

Australia, meanwhile, are hoping to return to winning ways in the 50-over format as they lost 1-2 to Pakistan in their last ODI series in March this year. However, with some big names resting, Australia played that series with the second string squad. This will be the first series in more than 18 months, where they will play with a full strength squad.

Australia have already announced their XI ahead of the match. Aaron Finch will be David Warner’s partner at the top of the order. Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschen, Glenn Maxwell, Alex Carey and Marcus Stones form the rest of the batting line-up.

They will be joined by three pacers from Pat Cummins, Jie Richardson and Josh Hazlewood. Ashton Agar will be the specialist spinner.

This will be the first five-match ODI series after the 2019 World Cup and it is not part of the ODI Super League and so, it serves as a suitable platform for both teams to test their players and find the right balance in their team. ODI World Cup ahead.
