Saina Nehwal vs. Iris Wang

Saina Nehwal has yet to make it past the second round this year and is looking for a resurgence. He missed the Indonesian Masters and the Indonesian Open in preparation for the Malaysian Open and he wants to get back to form. The 2012 London Olympic bronze medalist faces Iris Wang in the opening round.

World No. 33 Wang has done well this year by making it to the quarter-finals of the Swiss Open, the All England Championships and the Indonesian Masters. He also finished as a runner-up in the Orleans Masters. He is looking for his first title this year.

This will be the second meeting between the two players. Saina was last seen at the Orleans Masters last year, winning three sets. Saina is expected to face a tough fight against Wang again.

PV Sindhu vs Porpaui Chochuong

PV Sindhu is the only Indian to be selected in the tournament and will play against Ward No. 7 Porpaui Chochuong in the first round. Sindhu has won two titles this year and is looking to get her third.

Meanwhile, Chochuwong has had some impressive performances this year. He started the year as a runner-up at the Korea Open and reached the quarterfinals at the Asia Championships. Although he lost in the first round of the Indonesian Open and is looking forward to a good comeback, he has faced stiff opposition in PV Sindhu.

These two players will face each other for the 9th time. Sindhu is leading 5-3 in the head-to-head record. Their last meeting at the World Championships last year was when Sindhu won the match in a straight set. Sindhu will be the favorite again in the upcoming competition.

Parupalli Kashyap vs. Hue Kwang-hi

Kashyap is also struggling to get back to form after facing many fitness issues in recent times. His best performance this year is reaching the quarterfinals of the Swiss Open. He has yet to play in any other tournament. He wants to return to form at the Malaysia Open.

Meanwhile, 32nd-ranked Kwang-hee has failed to advance to the second round in any of the tournaments he has played this year. He entered the Malaysian Open after losing the first set at the Indonesian Open.

The two players met once at the US Open five years ago. Kashyap won the match in three sets. However, Kwang-hee is now a well-ranked player and Kashyap will face a big challenge.

Women’s doubles

India’s women’s doubles pair of Ashwini Ponnappa and N Siki Reddy will face off in the first round against sixth-seeded Japanese pair of Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida. Meanwhile, Haritha Harinarayanan and Ashna Roy will fight against Jeong Na-Yun and Kim Hai-Jeong.

Mixed doubles

Venkat Gaurab Prasad and Jihi Dewangan will start their campaign in the first round by facing South Korea’s Kim On-ho and Jeong Na-un.
