McCusker and Green advanced to the semi-finals in Rome

Max McCusker got Ireland’s European Championships campaign off to a flying start in Rome this morning by advancing in the 50m butterfly, while Darragh Green advanced in the 100m breaststroke.

McCusker, the Irish 50m butterfly record holder, clocked 23.44 in his best time of 23.61 to finish fifth in his heat and advance to 14th.m overall space.

Green, in his first international swim since the Tokyo Olympics, clocked 1:01.75 to finish third in his heat and will advance to this evening’s semifinals in eighth place.

Fresh from last week’s Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, Danielle Hill and Victoria Catterson both competed in four heats of the 100m freestyle where the pair touched in 56.39s for 22nd.n.d overall

Sunday Wales’ Liam Custer and Trojans’ Grace Hodgins both made their senior international debuts this morning, with the pair having already competed at the European Junior Championships earlier this summer. Custer was home in the 400m individual medley in 4:31.43, while Hodgins won her 800m freestyle heat in 8:57.87.

Also in competition this morning, Brendan Hyland was just a tenth of a second off his best time in the 50m butterfly in 24.19, with his main event coming up later in the week. and Eoin Corby clocked 1:01.47 in the 100m breaststroke heats.
