BGMI Ban: What BGMI Sports Industry Experts Have To Say?

The Indian government has been cracking down on allegations of data theft and security issues. In 2020, the government imposed a permanent ban on hundreds of apps in India, including PUBG Mobile. After this, Free Fire was also banned by the authorities in February 2022. The recent BGMI ban came as a surprise to many, but it also highlights the fact that the government is tracking activities in the esports sector and taking necessary action whenever necessary. Naturally, this calls for a set of proper guidelines for developers and players in the esports sector.

It is clear that the authorities have certain expectations from the esports industry in India and gaming developers want to fulfill these expectations by adhering to the limitations set by them. Sameer Barde, CEO, EGF, spoke to Brandwagon Online about this. He pointed out that laying down proper rules would ensure a better outcome in such contentious matters.

There is regulatory uncertainty in the gaming ecosystem. A comprehensive set of guidelines and regulations needs to be put in place that will ensure that the industry is clear about the government’s expectations and can meet them. The regulation will ensure that some form of escalation mechanism, grievance redressal mechanism is available not only to the players but also to the game operators.

Like Sameer Vard, several people have come out in support of the need for proper regulation within the industry. Multiple sources have pointed to alleged data theft and cyber leaks in China regarding the BGMI ban. But this is not the first such incident. Since the problem is recurring, a rule should be set up so that developers as well as gamers don’t suffer another title ban.

Several industry experts have pointed out the drawbacks of the ban

Reiterating the need for proper guidelines, several experts in the gaming industry pointed out why such a sudden ban was detrimental to the growth of eSports in India.

In a conversation with Financial Express, Jay Saita, a technology and gaming lawyer, noted that a sudden ban could drive away investors, further delaying the process of India becoming a global esports hub.

The government hasn’t made its stance clear, but such knee-jerk reactions dampen investor sentiment and set India back in its quest to become an esports hub.

Moreover, as the gaming industry was booming in India, several young enthusiasts opted for eSports and gaming as their career choice, ditching the traditional career path. However, such sudden bans on popular gaming titles may discourage people from pursuing careers in the eSports and gaming sector. Shivam Rao, Co-Founder, Trinity Gaming India, raised this issue during a recent conversation with Financial Express.

This will affect the livelihood and income of gamers and esports talent in the industry. Many accomplished gamers have left their families, homes, and traditional jobs to build and pursue their careers as professionals. Such a ban will make their future and career uncertain. If the decision to ban is upheld, we will likely see a decline in the number of gamers and its community across India.”

While no official announcement has been made regarding the reason for BGMI’s ban, a proper set of rules and guidelines is clearly crucial for the proper functioning and growth of the eSports sector in India. Proper guidelines will allow developers to have a clear idea of the restrictions they must adhere to when developing a game, thereby reducing the risk of sudden bans and subsequent negative impact on the gaming industry.
