Since the introduction of the sport at the Commonwealth Games in 1998, Indian players have won only three medals.

One of them was the path-breaking gold medal won by the famous pair of Jochana and Deepika Pallikal at the Glasgow edition eight years ago.

They return to the UK as favorites to win the women’s doubles title, having won the world title earlier this year.

Now a mother of twins, Deepika also won the mixed doubles title with Ghoshal at the World Doubles Championship in April to complete a sensational comeback. With the exception of Egypt, all the top squash playing countries, including England, are part of the Commonwealth. India have so far drawn a blank in the singles but Joshna and Ghoshal will make a final push to change that record. After returning from motherhood, Deepika is yet to embark on a solo career.

“Hopefully,” Ghoshal said on whether 2022 was India’s best chance of winning a singles medal.

“We’ve come leaps and bounds since we started playing black 20 years. We have all progressed as players. Everyone has a shot in all categories. The execution will be carried out within the next two weeks.

“CWG has always been a strong field. Winning a medal is a big deal here. “

Ghoshal was seeded third in the previous edition but made an early exit. He doesn’t think too much about his opponents because it creates extra pressure.

“I’m not looking at the draw. That’s where I got the error last time. Just trying to take it one day at a time and get myself into the medal round.”

The Indian trained with former world number one Gregory Gaultier for a week in Chennai before heading to Birmingham.

14-year-old Anahat Singh attracted a lot of attention after being selected in the women’s team. His performance will also be keenly followed. She won the girls’ Under-15 category at the Asian Junior Squash Championship last month.

So far, Anhat has won 46 national circuit titles, two national circuit titles, two national championships and eight international titles. She is the only Indian girl to win the US Junior Open and the British Junior Open in any category.

Other CWG debutants include Sunayana Kuruvila, Abhay Singh and V Senthilkumar.
