Melbourne Victory vs Man United: Man United beat the A-League side 4-1
Scorer: Economidis 5′; McTominay 43′, Martial 45′, Rashford 78′, Lupancu (OG) 94′
Confidence was high after beating Liverpool 4-0 earlier in the week, yet it was Melbourne City who took the early lead thanks to a well-worked team goal from goal kicks.
The move moved down United’s left, where Luke Shaw was caught out of position and Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire were off pace, leaving Melbourne’s Chris Economidis with an easy tap-in.
Melbourne Victory v Man United: Second pre-season win with goals from Martial, McTominay and Rashford
Erik ten Hag seemed to be pushing both Maguire and Lindelof up the pitch when his side were on the attack, and the test of this new approach inevitably left them vulnerable at times.
United got into the act just before half-time, as Scott McTominay – who had already seen two shots blocked – made the breakthrough to see his shot take a huge deflection and hit the back of the net.
The second came just two minutes later, courtesy of Anthony Martial from close range after some good work by Diogo Dalot in the build-up.
Melbourne Victory vs Man United: Erik ten Haag secures second pre-season win
Ten Hague made changes after half-time, fielding ten different outfield players for the second half including youngster Zidane Iqbal and new man Tyrell Malasia.
Marcus Rashford completed another move as he picked out just the right shot for a neat finish from a superb Eric Bailly pass.
There was a blast from the past when Nani was introduced before full-time for his Melbourne debut, but a late own goal added to the scoreline. It’s four more scores and a case so far, good for new boss Erik ten Haag.
