Sailor Eve McMahon won the ILCA6 European Youth Championship in Thessaloniki, Greece on Wednesday. He closed out a great series by winning both races on the final day.

The 17-year-old sailor from Hout Yacht Club won the 2021 Youth World Championship in Lake Garda, Italy last August.

McMahon has jumped on the overboard and celebrated in the traditional way. His close rival from the Netherlands, Russ Wind McMahon, has been congratulated for his dinghy.

ILCA6, formerly known as Laser Radial, is the women’s single-handed event for the Olympic Games. Analyst Murphy won silver for Ireland at Rio 2016 after missing the podium for a short time at the London Games four years ago.

“You really can’t get better than this.”

“Originally, I was using this regatta as a warm-up event because I didn’t travel long distances while sitting in my living shirt,” McMahon said shortly after arriving ashore. “I was really satisfied with my last day. I ended up with two bullets so you really can’t be better than this.”

McMahon is now heading to the Netherlands for next week’s Sailing Youth World Championships and then to defend his class world title in Texas.

“I’m only focusing on my process and my own sailing and not too many results – but obviously a win would be great,” he said.
