On the 5th day, England were set to chase a 299-run target by the Kiwis and the English batsmen, Johnny Bairstow and Ben Stokes, in particular, created a frenzy of attack on the spectators. This innings helped England set a new record in chasing the most successful runs, especially in the fourth innings of a game at Bridge.

Bairstow was deprived of being the fastest English player to score a Test century in just one delivery. The record is still held by Gilbert Jessup, who scored a century off just 76 balls in the last Test match of the 1902 Ashes series. Bairstow came very close to the milestone set about 120 years ago.

England’s fourth innings was a mixture of fun, fear and entertainment. Tensions in the English camp erupted after Jack Crowley was dismissed for a wicket as the Kiwis picked up some early wickets in the form of Rowe Root and Oli Pope. When star all-rounder Ben Stokes came down to bat, England needed 206 runs to win.

Stokes and Root continue their responsibilities as the pair keep England’s hopes alive and go on a tea break. After drinking tea, the massacre of Johnny Bairstow and Ben Stokes began. Bairstow, who had a beautiful barren run late in the IPL 2022, rose to the occasion and shone for him.

Captain Stokes played a great knock of 70 to 75 but it was Johnny Bairstore’s Blitzkrieg who moved everyone on the ground. A man determined to prove his point, Bairstow scored 136 off 92 balls to help England take an irresistible lead in the series. He had 14 fours and 6 huge sixes in his innings.
