‘Dozens of Covid cases every day’ – Medical Authority
Peter Harcourt, the CGF’s medical adviser, revealed that Birmingham 2022 had seen a “dozen” cases a day following the arrival of 1,400 athletes in the English city.
Birmingham 2022’s COVID-19 policy has been questioned by some top party officials, but Harcourt defended the measures implemented by the organisers.
“We’re in the middle of a really difficult time in the pandemic,” Harcourt said.
“It’s complicated, it changes all the time.
“I am quite happy with the way things are here.
“They did a wonderful job.
“We have a lot of tests coming up so we can fix the issues and keep the competitions going.
“I’m really confident that we’re going to manage the Covid risk well.”
Britain has lifted all coronavirus entry rules for travellers, but has told those attending the Birmingham 2022 Games they need to be tested.

Transfer case-by-case situations
If athletes test positive, Harcourt said they will handle the situation on a “case-by-case basis” by conducting a risk assessment before deciding whether each infected person should be placed in isolation.
“They will bring a history of their Covid vaccination status and any problems they have encountered in previous tests so that we have a good, clear understanding of where that person should be when they should test positive and manage them appropriately in context. Either in the quarantine hotel or in the village,” Harcourt said.
The process is “very comprehensive” and has “good clinical support,” Harcourt elaborated.
“We’ve got a fair degree of experience dealing with it.
“I’m confident we’ll be on top of it and we’ll have a successful game.”
Asked how many cases Birmingham 2022 had identified, Harcourt added: “We had about a dozen on the day and we had about 1,200 to 1,400 athletes going through so it gives you an idea that it’s not a huge number.”
Harcourt revealed that cycle threshold (CT) values are also being used when dealing with a positive case.
The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has advised Indian athletes and their support workers to stay indoors following the rise in the number of Covid-19 cases. The Commonwealth Games (CWG) will begin from Thursday, July 28 in Birmingham, where a high number of Covid-19 cases are being recorded.
