India have a star-studded line-up led by dual Olympic medalist and world No. 7 PV Sindhu. In the men’s singles, world number 9 Lakshya Sen and world number 11 Kidambi, who were part of the team that won the historic Thomas Cup earlier this year.

In doubles, India will be led by world number 8 men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, women’s doubles pair of Trisa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, while Ashwini Ponnappa and Sumeth Reddy will partner in mixed doubles. Despite missing 2012 London Olympics bronze medalist Saina Nehwal, who won the women’s singles gold in 2018, India have a very strong team and are favourites.

Meanwhile, Pakistan has announced a four-member squad for badminton. None of the players are in the top 100 in the world rankings and the squad is led by Mahur Shehzad, who is ranked 175 in women’s singles. None of the other players are in the top 500 of the world rankings.

Ahead of the CWG 2022, the Pakistan Sports Board decided to drop the badminton team from the Commonwealth Games squad as the sports body was of the view that they had no chance of winning a medal. However, the decision was later withdrawn by the Pakistan Olympic Association and the four-member team was allowed to participate in the quadrennial event.

Squad:

In mixed team events, each tie will consist of five matches in men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and one match each in mixed doubles. Even if a team wins the first three matches and ties, all five matches will be played in the group stage.

In the 2018 Games, India and Pakistan faced each other in the group match which turned out to be a one-sided affair as India easily won the tie 5–0. None of the games even went to three games as the Indians completely dominated to win in straight games. Similar results are expected in the upcoming competition.
