The IPL marathon spans two and a half months

As confirmed by Sourav Ganguly and Jay Shah in early June, the IPL is set to get an official two-and-a-half-month window from IPL 2023 in the FTP calendar as per the final draft. Furthermore, Cricket Australia’s BBL and England’s The Hundred will also get windows with cuts to bilateral cricket.

The new proposed plan was discussed at the ICC meeting held in Birmingham. Every year, between the second and third week of March and the first week of June will be fixed for the IPL. Although the IPL currently enjoys a 54-day window, Jai Shah confirmed that it will be extended. The BCCI has also set plans to go back to home and away matches which will make it a 94-match affair compared to 74 matches in the current format.

ICC FTP 2023-27: What does the new draft say?

  • The final draft confirms the extended window of IPL to 74 days.
  • No matches will be scheduled during this period. However, the cricket board can decide the bilateral series as per their own during this period.
  • But unlike IPL, BBL and The Hundred or other franchise leagues will not have an official ICC window.
  • All other franchise leagues will play bilateral series and sometimes clash with each other.
  • But as per the new FTP, CA will have its own BBL window while the ECB will create their own for The Hundred.
  • However, this creates an interesting scenario as PSL and IPL are set to clash in 2025, at least in part.
  • As the Champions Trophy in Pakistan ends on March 9, the PSL can only take place after that.
  • If the IPL 2025 is played as per the schedule, the closing week of PSL and the opening week of IPL will clash, meaning players will have to prioritize.

  • PSL: Pakistan Super League: February – March 2023

Team India’s busy FTP schedule

The Indian team will play 138 bilateral international matches during this five-year period between May 2023 and April 2027. India will take part in 38 Tests, 39 ODIs and 61 T20Is — a clear indication of the direction to increase the number of T20Is. Where is the game going? ODI bilaterals will mostly be three-match series.

Following the success of last year’s India-Australia series Down Under, which went to the penultimate session of the final day to produce a winner, it has been decided to make the Border-Gavaskar Trophy a five-Test series.
